What is a Dental Implant & CT Guided Implants?

Dental implants are titanium roots that can replace missing teeth or secure loose dentures. They feel and function like natural teeth. They stimulate the jaw bone and help prevent bone loss which typically occurs after teeth are lost. They are self-supportive and can be flossed and brushed like natural teeth. They are made of titanium, are impervious to cavities, and never need a root canal. As they are self-supportive, they help preserve natural teeth by avoiding “cutting” healthy teeth down to allow for a bridge.

What is Periodontics?

The word “periodontal” originates from the Greek for “around the teeth.” Periodontists such as Dr. Elyassian, specialize in conditions involving the support structures for the teeth, including the gums and alveolar bone. They advise and perform the surgeries related to their specialty namely those pertaining to gum disease and dental implants.

More On Dental Implants

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots and often a preferred option to a bridge or traditional dentures. Unlike dentures, dental implants are permanent and non-removable. Some of the reasons for their preferred course of action are:

  • They include a strong foundation for permanent replacement teeth. Implants are customized to the individual patient’s mouth to avoid any unnatural vexing or intrusion upon any remaining natural teeth
  • Dental implants make chewing easy and more pleasant than do dentures
  • Implants are durable and can last for the length of a patient’s life. They do, however, require the same standard oral hygiene as natural teeth. The individual must brush, floss, rinse and keep regular dental visits

How much do dental implants cost?

Pricing for dental implants ranges depending on the individual case. Ultimately the amount of money a person will spend depends on:

  • How much work is required and the complexity of the needed surgery
  • If the treatment is performed by an experienced specialist or a general dentist
  • The type of implant, abutment, and crown used
  • How much, if any, of the treatment is covered by the dental insurance provider
  • If a patient does not have insurance, he or she may apply for aid from a financing company such as CareCredit. Such organizations will often develop a monthly payment plan with the patient

Is a dental implant covered by insurance?

Most traditional health insurance policies do not cover dental implants, as they have often been considered cosmetic. However, a growing number of dental insurance policies have covered this procedure in recent years. The insurance agent and Dr. Elyassian will be able to answer any questions regarding this.

Are dental implants better than veneers?

Well, the first thing to understand is that dental implants and dental veneers are used for different purposes. Veneers are used for more cosmetic dental treatment. They are great for giving people a smile makeover. Veneers work well when someone wants to synchronize the color of their teeth to a consistent shade of ideal color or fix cracks in a tooth or teeth. Veneers are also great for improving or protecting a person’s tooth enamel while smoothing the tooth’s surface. Like dentures, veneers may fall out of a patient’s mouth.

Receiving dental implants is often the preferred dental procedure for replacing lost teeth as opposed to dental veneers because veneers are currently non-repairable and may cause a person’s existing teeth to become more sensitive to heat and cold. Due to their nature as permanent replacements, implants will not fall out of a mouth.

Are dental implants considered oral surgery?

Despite the long-held assumption that all surgeries require overnight stays in hospitals while under general anesthesia, an increasing number of out-patient operations, including .dental implants, may be considered “surgery.”

Are dental implants a good idea for me?

Any surgical procedure, dental or otherwise, should be decided upon only after careful consideration by the individual person and his or her healthcare provider. The simple fact is that nobody should want dentures, dental implants, or even cavity fillings for that matter. However, sometimes receiving these treatments is necessary.

Dr. Elyassian will help you determine if dental implants are a good treatment option for you by thoroughly examining your teeth, gums, and oral bone integrity. This level of examination often involves X-rays and computer tomography scans. Once the condition of the patient’s overall oral health (condition of the tissue, hygiene) is considered to be positive, Dr. Elyassian will advise the candidate of the best dental implant treatment plan.

It should be noted that smoking may hinder the success of the overall procedure. For this reason, Dr. Elyassian will typically request patients to quit or at least minimize the number of cigarettes smoking before he begins an implant procedure.

If a person does proceed with dental implants, what happens?

Again, Dr. Elyassian will discuss the details of your specific surgery at the appropriate time. However, there are some general points that one may consider. In preparation for a dental implant procedure, Dr. Elyassian may ask the patient to rinse with anti-bacterial mouthwash and to begin a prescription of antibiotics as a preventive measure.

As with the total cost of implants, the time required for successful dental implants depends on the amount of work done, the specific teeth that are being replaced, and the patient’s current oral health. Still, a good estimate of the required time is that an implant for a single tooth will often take between one and two hours from start to finish. This period of time includes preparation such as anesthesia and dressing the patient.

While people often worry that dental implant procedures will be very painful, this is usually not the case. Along with providing the correct amount of anesthesia, Dr. Elyassian may prescribe a pain medication to take after the operation.

It is not required for patients to bring anyone with them, the day of surgery. Almost all patients can drive themselves back. If for any reason a driver is required after surgery, the patient will be advised.
